Cremation after a long, heavy, and exemplary duty

More than five years ago (it seems ages in digital photography) I reviewed the Sanyo Xacti J1 and was very much pleased by its image quality and handiness. Some days ago, after having given me a first signal of its passing away, the J1 remained mute for good. No attempt, whatsoever, was successful. So, I dismantled it and the inside revealed me the quality of its components and the accuracy of its construction.

I therefore felt I had to put aside - in a sort of cinerary urn, as an homage to its long work - the parts here shown in the picture. You can see the glass prism, two of the glass lenses, the tiny sensor (5.27 x 3.96mm), the loudspeaker, whose magnet - like a spider carrying on its back a crowdy brood - had attracted almost all the binding screws.

Soon after the burial ceremony, I searched ebay to find and buy another J1 sample, to no avail. The point is, that I had carried this camera always with me, as it was very small and lightweight, and mainly because its gauging system had missed very few shots among the thousands I had taken during these years.

I'm therefore sure that Sanyo - of which, just few days ago, Panasonic bought a controlling stake - is still building the new cameras with this same quality standard, if not better, and one sample I'm curious to test in the next few months will be the new hybrid Sanyo Xacti TH1 Dual camera. The photo hereunder was made with a Foveon equipped Polaroid X530. March 2010 update: got a J1 sample, almost brand new, on ebay Germany, for 34 euro.
